About Me

Jane McNeill Artisan Potter

In the autumn of 2019, a friend told me she’d started a pottery class at our local arts centre.

“Go on, Jane,” she said. “Join up — you’ll love it. We have such a laugh.”

So I did. We shared many light-hearted evenings, lots of cake, and more than a few wobbly pots. But from the very first time I touched clay, I was completely absorbed.

Now, in 2025, I find myself with a wheel, two kilns, a quiet workshop full of tools, and a small pottery business that brings me a great deal of joy.

There’s something very grounding about working with clay. The moment my hands are on the wheel, everything else falls away. The only thing that matters is that small piece of earth moving between my fingers — it’s a simple, absorbing process that never stops teaching me.

I’m drawn to clean lines, balanced forms, and pottery that feels comfortable in the hand. Handmade pieces carry a certain presence — a quiet story of how they were made, and of the person who chose them. When you bring a handmade object into your home, you often remember when and where you found it, and what drew you to it. That connection, whether to the piece or the maker, is something special.

My glazes are inspired by memories of two peaceful holidays on the Isles of Scilly — where the sky is open, the sea is clear, and the pale sand glints with mica from the granite beneath your feet. It’s a place that left me feeling calm, light, and deeply connected to the natural world. I’ve chosen my glaze palette to reflect that feeling — and to bring a little of it into everyday life.

We often move quickly through our days, ticking off lists and carrying on. I hope my work serves as a gentle reminder to pause now and then, to notice the beauty in small things, and to take a moment to breathe.
